Who is Elizabeth Liz Cambage

Elizabeth Folake Cambage, a basketball player from Australia, was most recently a member of the Los Angeles Sparks in the Women’s National Basketball Association. She was born on August 18, 1991. (WNBA). 

Cambage now holds the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points against the New York Liberty on July 17, 2018.

She participated for Australia’s national team, the Opals, from 2009 to 2021, representing them in three competitions and winning three medals: gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, silver at the 2018 World Cup, and bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Where does Liz come from?

Cambage was born in London on August 18, 1991 to a Nigerian father and an Australian mother. Cambage’s parents had divorced when she was three months old, and she moved to Australia with her mother. 

The family departed Eden, New South Wales, when Cambage was ten years old, and they finally moved to Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.

How did the WNBA career of Liz begin?

In March 2011, Cambage admitted that she was hesitant to join the WNBA team after being chosen by the Tulsa Shock, saying, “I’ve made it clear that I do not want to play in Tulsa. I won’t be joining the WNBA despite their efforts to make me a franchise player. I’m going there to learn some tricks and improve. However, what can you do?  “

She took part in the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game.

Five years later, Cambage returned to the WNBA, but she only joined the Shock for the 2013 season. In February 2018, she signed a multi-year contract with the Dallas Wings.

How was the national team career of Liz?

Cambage participated for the Australian junior women’s national team in 2009, taking home gold in the Oceania World Qualification Series and a silver at the William Jones Cup in Taiwan. 

The following year, she participated in the World Championships in Thailand as a member of the Australian junior women’s team.

In 2008, she received her first call-up to the senior national team, and in a test match against China in 2009, she won her first Australian Opals cap. 

She competed against New Zealand in the Oceania Championship game on September 2, 2009, in Canberra, and she was a member of the Australian senior women’s team that won the Oceania World Championship gold medal.

Cambage was chosen for the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, but he withdrew less than two weeks prior to the event. She stated that the cause was a mental health issue. 

It was discovered in May 2022 that Cambage had racially taunted Nigerian team members during a pre-Olympics training game by calling them “monkeys” and telling them to “Go back to your Third World Country.” 

The training match was subsequently called off after it was learned that she had elbowed and slapped members of the Nigerian team.
